About Us
Who
We
Are
It is our purpose to seek to love, accept, and build up one another. Further we seek to build bridges
and break down walls within the Christian community (Ephesians 4:3).
At the turn of the century, a small group of people banded together under the leadership of Miss Weeks and Miss Barrett for Bible Study and prayer. The group imported its first church building from New York State and placed it on our present location in the Waterville district of Waterbury. Many changes have been made since the original building. Once it was almost destroyed by a tornado, and in 1981 we expanded by purchasing 2 buildings across the street to house our offices, classrooms, a food pantry and more.
Under the pastoral leadership of Milton Nilson, John Samsvick and Bob Miller our name changed from Waterville Union Church, to The Waterville Bible Church to now The Bible Church of Waterbury. Our size has ebbed and flowed with the change in industry around the local area. Pastor Ken Richard, a former missionary to Brazil, gave us direction towards missions and our current pastor, Richard Dill, who worked with Youth for Christ in New Jersey and
Connecticut, has continued this tradition.
The Bible Church Constitution combines our past heritage and our current philosophies. We believe in the
Lord Jesus Christ. We understand that we are not perfect but we strive to be more like Him every day by
serving Him individually and collectively as a church body. Our church government is neither dictatorial
nor totally democratic. We have an elder-based leadership who are appointed by the church to serve as
the spiritual leaders and give the church direction. The Elder Board sets the philosophy and tone, the
Executive Board makes official decisions, the Deacons allow for informational flow among church members,
and members vote annually to confirm the direction and growth we wish to strive for in the coming year.
We have never been affiliated with a denomination, though we are a charter member of the National Association of Evangelicals. Consequently we are financially independent; our financial support comes totally from within. Since we believe that giving must be from the heart unto the Lord (as taught in Colossians 3), we make every effort not to be coercive. Tithing is purely optional and we believe it is different person to person.
We prayerfully seek to demonstrate the unity for which Jesus prayed (John 17).
